Nicoya Peninsula, GuanacasteDestination NicoyaThe Nicoya Peninsula is nestled on the northern Pacific Coast of Costa Rica, across the Gulf of Nicoya. This remote area is one of the last frontiers of Costa Rica. It is off the beaten track and can only be reached by ferry, or via a long drive on secondary roads. The Peninsula is divided into the provinces of Guanacaste which occupies the larger part in the north, and the province of Puntarenas in the south. It is famous for its beautiful warm water, its tropical arid and the tropical dry forest. Roads are mostly in poor conditions, and during the rainy season (April-November) most of them get washed-out. During this period, the best way to get there is taking the ferry from Puntarenas to Paquera or with a small plane from Nature Air. The town of Nicoya in the interior is not very developed, but there are many nice hotels and resort and other comfortable lodging options along the coast. The beaches in this area are amazingly beautiful; Mal Pais, Hermosa and Santa Teresa are 3 well known surfing beaches while Samara and Tambor have calm waters surrounded by nature and are ideal for swimming. This area offers a lot of attractions and activities which combines nature and adventure. Surfing on Costa Rica's Pacific Coast is definitely a great sport; it is warm water, awesome views, and the big waves that make this an unforgettable experience. Beaches such as Manzanillo, Samara, Caletas, Nacascolo, Arenilla and Tamarindo are famous for its stunning natural beauty. The Nicoya Peninsula features some spectacular natural attractions, such as several nature wildlife reserves and National Parks. You will also find subterranean caves and other aquatic activities are also possible, such as scuba diving, snorkeling, wind surfing and sailing. |
